OPSO, JOHN CURTIS SCHOOL PARTNER TO HELP LAURA EVACUEES WHO MAY BE IMPACTED BY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

NEW ORLEANS - 10-02-2020

Victims Assistance Fair Saturday at Springhill Suites Hotel

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, OPSO's Crime Victims Assistance Program, in partnership with John Curtis Christian School and others, is hosting a victims assistance fair for Hurricane Laura evacuees who may have experienced domestic violence while staying in Orleans Parish.

"Since the start of the pandemic, there has been an increase in the number of domestic violence cases across the country," said Capt. Stephanie Minto, lead investigator for OPSO's Crime Victims Assistance Program. "Sadly, some Hurricane Laura evacuees have experienced domestic violence anew, while in New Orleans attempting to recover from the devastating storm. We're reaching out to our neighbors from the Lake Charles area to provide as much assistance as we can."

The Victims Assistance Fair takes place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Springhill Suites Hotel, 301 St. Joseph St.

OPSO Crime Victims Assistance Program will set up an information table at the hotel to help Laura evacuees impacted by domestic violence determine if they are eligible for cash assistance or a referral to the Family Justice Center, or both.

The John Curtis School's girls track team is also supporting the victims assistance fair with clothing items, water and toiletries. Additional support is provided by A1 Absolute Best Care, LLC and Branch Man Construction, LLC.
