The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office has named two new senior officers. Blake J. Arcuri has been named general counsel; and Johnette J. Staes recently joined the Sheriff's Office as director of human resources.
Arcuri is responsible for supervision of all litigation involving the Sheriff's Office and providing legal advice to all OPSO divisions. He will also advise on the drafting of policies and procedures and management contracts, as well as assist with matters surrounding the consent agreement. Both the legal and risk management departments will report to him.
Prior to joining the Sheriff's Office, Arcuri was a trial attorney at the Usry, Weeks & Matthews law firm. He previously worked as an assistant district attorney in the felony trials division under District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro.
Arcuri earned his juris doctorate degree from the Loyola University College of Law and his bachelor's degree in political science from Louisiana State University. He is a graduate of Brother Martin High School.
As the new director of human resources, Staes is responsible for OPSO's workforce initiatives, including recruiting, performance management, employee compensation and employee engagement.
Previously Staes served as senior director of human resources for Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots, a Churchill Downs Company. She was responsible for the talent acquisition, workforce planning, succession planning, talent management, training and development and payroll among other duties.
Prior to that, she served as district human resources manager for Best Buy's Louisiana/Mississippi District and as an employment manager for Harrah's New Orleans Hotel and Casino. She began her career in human resources as a human resources manager at Wyndham Worldwide Hotel Group in New Orleans.
Staes holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Loyola University. She volunteers her time to advise Vayla New Orleans and the Propeller business incubator on human resources matters.
